Footsteps Crossing
Lyon, France
IX.28.2026
Since 1868, pedestrian crossings have been installed across the globe, allowing humans by foot to cross busier streets safer. It started in London, where the railway engineer John Peake Knight had a lantern with three semaphore arms installed. After the gas leaked, causing an explosion, the idea died, until the traffic dramatically increased by the turn of the century, and in 1951, the first pedestrian crossing was marked in the town of Slough, near London, and dubbed “zebra crossing”.

The patterns have varied throughout the years but studies show that the zebra performs best. Yet, the French in Lyon are using footsteps.
