as a child I asked myself
as an adult I continue to ask
somehow, somewhy, never did I utter the ask towards you
and yet, I wonder

boxers enter the ring, and cross themselves
after fifteen or merely three rounds, the victors cross themselves

ready to take the mound, the pitcher will cross himself
the batter connects, it is out of here, and reaching home plate, he crosses himself

the footballer focuses for a penalty kick, and crosses himself

pleas to beat the opponent
if need be, to the ground

as a child I asked myself, and as an adult I continue to ask
is the boxer praying for godly power to incapacitate his fellow athlete?
is the baseball player asking of god that he be better?
is the footballer of the belief he ought to be the victor?

is it not blasphemous to ask the divine for support in defeating the opponent?
