111 West 57th Street by SHoP Architects (2022)

The skinniest skyscraper in the world with a staggering ratio of 24:1.

The SHoP Architects-designed luxury tower, which tapers to a pencil-like top, has only one condominium per floor. Situated in an area known as Billionaire’s Row, it faces Central Park to the north and Lower Manhattan to the south.

Construction of the tower began in 2014, but stalled in 2017 due to financial difficulties. Close to completion, the tower came under some criticism as ice fell from the upper reaches to the street, causing injuries and closures.

With a total height of 1,428 feet, the residential tower at 111 West 57th Street is among the tallest buildings in New York City. As a prominent new local and regional landmark, it bears a special responsibility to contribute meaningfully and elegantly to the shared skyline. We achieved that goal by carefully shaping the tower’s profile, and by developing an innovative approach to using an authentic material from the golden age of the Manhattan skyscraper: terra-cotta.

  1. My wife and I were just in NY and marveled at this building. It was our guide as we traversed Central Park, always pointing the way for us back North. I enjoyed a nice pipe on that cool October day of wandering. Thanks for the write-up.
