A couple of catalpa branches with tardy tips blooming — four weeks later
Almost to the precise date, four weeks ago today I noticed the hourly speed with which a catalpa tree begins to show the berry-like tips on their branches which will become cotton-like bulbs, before turning into gentle white flowers with purple lines and yellow stains on the inner part of their petals. Their short lives of gentle beauty precede an almost unanimous fall to the ground, creating a white floor which gradually appears to be fermenting into browns.
I thought this short spring theater piece was the end of this catalpa's seasonal event.
Yesterday I witnessed some brand new purple tips, some already releasing their cotton-like formation. Today, some new flowers are open.
