Our intrinsic drive for growth, understanding and preservation requires neither talent nor inspiration. It is rather an organically flowing existential process. Just as heart and lungs pump, it is our natural automatism. This is the animal us – quotidian, ordinary, simple.
It may remain that simple, as we hunt, multiply and rest, with which we may have happiness aplenty. However, we refuse to keep it simple, for the noble is us inherent, too. Next to the simple, for self and kin, we also aspire refinement, virtuosity and exceptionalism. We organize rhythms, dance to them, whistle, document experiences and perceptions, as we aim to add to what has preceded us. Not only do we work tirelessly in achieving a more effective existence but do search and create in realms of the immaterial. Humans in densely populated metropoles, seeing themselves as highly civilized and educated cultures, as well as those in remote deserts and jungles, detached from the civilizations they are even unaware of, all develop recipes, fashions, machinery, visuals and sounds with practical as well as aesthetic goals. We wish to be beauty and we express beauty, aspiring it beyond the simple. As animals we are, we bathe in the need to be elegant, great, distinct, knowledgeable, all the while naturally maintaining primitivity through competitive struggle and basic desires.
The animal, the animalistic and animal behaviour — these terms are often used in labeling the unrefined, primitive and raw state of living beings, as if animal would merely imply a lack of interest in intellectual and mechanical progression and development, without an interest in beauty and spirit. Yet, through mere attention to experience and not just through formal education, we become aware of layers that lead to calculated progression and betterment. We are animal and noble.
